Shakespeare at home

Welcome. I’m Shakespeare.

I live with Wendy, who came into my life a few years ago when she visited her sister Diane in Oregon. Those two went to a fundraiser for Diane’s friend. There Wendy invested $20 in tickets to be drawn for a variety of prizes. She threw $17 worth of them into the bucket assigned to me. After some tense, nail-biting moments, a winning ticket was drawn–Wendy won! That’s how our partnership began. I was a FREE BEAR, except for the $20 in tickets and the $80 spent to ship me from Oregon to North Dakota.

Wendy is a Barnes and Noble bookseller (and a retired English teacher) so we read A LOT. We proudly call ourselves “book snobs.” Follow us here, and you will find reviews of classics, current bestsellers, lucky discoveries, debuts of authors we believe will triumph, and some fluff we fill in to rest our minds.

And occasionally, we see a movie; therefore, watch for an opinion about Elvis or Where the Crawdads Sing (we try to stay current). Speaking of “current,” we also observe and study what’s happening in our world. Our strong belief is that we must stay engaged. Our values and moral principles require engagement.

Until next time–Shakespeare signing off.

More Patience – Wendy loses hers!

She tries, but sometimes words slip out before she can stop her tongue. Here is the story, with apologies to all the students Wendy had the lucky opportunity to encounter during her long teaching career.

The scene was Barnes and Noble before Christmas. The store was not staffed to the maximum, a worry for those on staff who were often overwhelmed with phone calls, in-store customers, orders, shelving, stickering and unstickering…the list of tasks goes on. Wendy was working at cash wrap. The line was not that long; however, one couple took a bit longer than the man behind them could tolerate.

Because Wendy did not immediately see his immediate need to purchase his one item so he could leave immediately, he threw the word “ignorant” at her as he left. Wendy’s response: “I know ‘ignorant’ when I see it. I was a teacher for 42 years.” She apologizes to her students, as said before.

Wendy’s New Year’s resolution: more patience, less ignorance.

One response to “More Patience – Wendy loses hers!”

Love this and SO TRUE. Leaving the cold tundra for the winter and heading to warm climes. Because of you, I became a fan of Joe Pickett and now am trying to get all his books so I can read in order. Missing two out of the first fifteen but I’ll find ‘em. Would really like to take down a good read besides mysteries. Overwhelmed with book lists and too many tables at B & N. Love, Patchett, Kingsolver, Franzen, Russo, the normal cast of current, great writers. Any current suggestions would be mighty appreciated. And last, don’t apologize…rude and nasty folks need to be called out for rude and nasty behavior. Thanks, Nancy
